Computers and moving the app
How Relay2Trade runs on one computer at a time, the list of computers in the Desk and what each state means, how to move the app to another computer or VPS, what happens to the old one, how to sign a computer out or back in from anywhere, and what "Sync settings & listeners" carries over when you move.
One account, one app at a time
Your account runs the app on one computer at a time. A "computer" here is any place the app runs: your Windows PC, a Windows or Linux VPS, a Linux computer, or a VPS created from the Desk. When the app is signed in somewhere new, it is signed out where it ran before, so two copies never trade the same signal.
The app can be installed on several computers; only the one signed in trades. The Desk (relay2trade.com/control, in a browser or installed on your phone's home screen) is the remote and can be open on as many devices as you like: it is not a computer in this sense.
The list of computers
In the Desk open Account → Security → "Computers running the app". It lists the computers your app has signed in from. Each shows its name, its system, the app's version, when it first signed in and when its app was last heard. A VPS created for you is marked "VPS"; one in your own DigitalOcean account is marked "VPS at DigitalOcean", with its region.
What each state means
- "running the app": the computer your app is signed in on, and its app is running.
- "app closed": "The app is closed on this computer, or the computer is off, so nothing is traded. Open it there and it carries on by itself: it is still signed in to your account."
- "signed out": the app there is signed out, with when and why: when the password was reset, when the app signed in on another computer, by "This wasn't me", from the app itself, or from the Desk.
- "signed in, waiting for the app": you approved it to sign back in, and its app has not picked that up yet.
- "asks to sign in": its app used a one-time code from your Desk and waits for your answer.
- "starting", "stopped", "put away": states of a "VPS: Quick install" (see Running Relay2Trade on a VPS).
What you can do from the list
- "Run it on a VPS" (top of the card): opens "Where the app runs", with every way to start the app somewhere else.
- "Restart the app" on the computer running it: "Restart the app on that computer? Open trades stay in MetaTrader."
- "Sign it out": "Sign the app out on that computer? It stops there until it is signed back in; open trades stay in MetaTrader."
- "Sign it back in" on a signed-out computer: signs the app back in there without opening that computer.
- "Take the approval back" while a computer waits to pick up its approval.
- "Accept" / "Decline" for a computer that asks to sign in with a code.
- "Remove" on a computer that is not signed in: "Take this computer off the list? If the app on it is opened again, it signs in as on a new computer."
- "Application" under the computer running the app: its own switches ("Launch at startup", "Start minimized in tray", "Keep running when window closes", "Show tips", "Log level"). The app must be running to change them.
Steps that sign out, restart, stop, move or remove the app ask you to confirm it is you first: your password (and two-factor code when it is on), or Google when your account has Google connected.
Moving to another computer or VPS
- Keep your settings on your account. With "Sync settings & listeners" on, your profiles, listeners and limits are kept on your account and the new place picks them up. It is on unless you switched it off; check in the app under Settings → "Application" → "Remote control & sync".
- Start the app in the new place.
- A VPS: in the Desk, Account → Security → "Run it on a VPS" (or from the app on your PC: Account → "Run it on a VPS"), pick a way and follow its steps. See Where the app runs.
- Another Windows computer: install the app there and sign in with your email and password, through the website, or with a code from the Desk.
- A Linux machine: "Linux: get the command" and paste it there.
- Sign in MetaTrader 5 and Telegram in the new place. Open Connections in the Desk. Each profile asks for its own MetaTrader login and Telegram sign-in there.
- Check your listeners and settings once in the Desk before switching listeners to Auto.
What follows you and what stays behind
- Follows your account (with "Sync settings & listeners" on): your profiles, their settings and limits, your listeners with their chats and modes, and your signal history as synced.
- Stays where the app ran: the MetaTrader 5 login and the Telegram sign-in. They live where the app runs, so you sign them in once more in the new place. "A broker login stays on the computer it was typed on, so type the password here once."
- Stays at your broker: positions already open, with their stop-loss and take-profit.
On a Windows computer where a MetaTrader is already logged in to your account, Connections offers it: "Already logged in where your app runs. Pick one and Relay2Trade uses that MetaTrader as it is, with no password to type (MetaTrader restarts once)".
With "Sync settings & listeners" off
With settings sync off, your settings are kept only on the computer your app runs on: nothing of them is stored on your account, so a new computer starts without them. "Where the app runs" says so before setting up a VPS: "Settings sync is off, so your settings are only on your computer and a VPS would start without them. Turn settings sync on in the app first, then come back here." Turn it on in the app on the old computer (Settings → "Application" → "Remote control & sync" → "Sync settings & listeners") while it still runs, then move.
What happens to the old computer
At the moment the new one signs in, the old one is signed out. There:
- the app stops reading your groups and placing trades;
- it shows its sign-in screen ("Session expired — log in again", or "Signed out by a password reset or by signing in on another computer?" on its sign-in page);
- it takes its trading bridge out of every MetaTrader it traded in and leaves those MetaTraders closed, one you installed yourself included; each keeps its broker login and your own charts;
- what it keeps on that computer (settings, history) stays there, and comes back if you sign in there again;
- in the list of computers it shows "signed out", "when the app signed in on another computer".
Open trades stay at your broker with their stop-loss and take-profit. The app on the old computer no longer manages them.
The Telegram session on the old computer is no longer used. If you are not going back, remove it in Telegram under Settings → Devices.
When you are done with an old computer for good, uninstall the app there (Settings → "Application" → "Danger zone" → "Uninstall Relay2Trade"), and "Remove" it from the list. When you stop renting a VPS, also delete it at its provider.
Signing a computer back in from anywhere
When a computer was signed out (a password reset, or the app signing in elsewhere), you can sign it back in without opening it: useful for a VPS.
- Desk → Account → Security → "Computers running the app".
- On the signed-out computer, press "Sign it back in" and confirm it is you.
- The approval waits 60 minutes. The app on that computer must be open and online; it signs itself in within a minute ("signed in, waiting for the app" until then).
- The computer running the app now is signed out at that moment.
If the approval runs out first: "The approval ran out before the app on that computer picked it up. Is the app open there, and the computer online? Then sign it back in again."
For a "VPS: Quick install", the button is "Run it on the VPS": "Your app moves to the VPS and is signed out on …".
Signing a computer out remotely
- Desk → Account → Security → "Computers running the app".
- On the computer running the app, press "Sign it out" and confirm.
The app stops there until it is signed back in; open trades stay in MetaTrader. The list then shows "Signed out on …, from the Desk."
If you think someone else is using your account, change your password: that signs the app out too. "This wasn't me" in a security email signs every device out, the app included, and asks you to set a new password. See Account security.
Adding a computer with a one-time code
A code signs the app in on another computer without typing your password there.
- In the Desk open "Where the app runs" and choose "Windows: sign in with a code" (or "Installed it? Sign it in with a code" on the Windows card).
- Confirm it is you and press "Make a code". You get a code of 12 letters and digits. It works once, for 10 minutes. It is made in your browser and never sent to Relay2Trade: "Only this page knows the code. Closing this hides it for good; you can make another." Keep the Desk open.
- In the app on the other computer choose "Sign in with a code from the Desk", type the code and press "Use the code". On a computer with no screen, the Desk shows a command to run instead.
- The Desk asks "A computer asks to sign in", with the computer's name, system, app version, where it called from and when. Press "Accept". The app there signs in within moments, and the computer that ran the app until then is signed out ("Accepting signs the app out on …"). Trades already open stay in MetaTrader.
If you did not make a code just now, or the computer is not yours, press "Decline". Declined, or not answered in 10 minutes, nothing is signed in and the app there says it was not accepted.
Moving the app from a VPS back to a PC
When the app runs on "VPS: Quick install" and you sign in to the app on a PC, the app asks first: "Your app already runs on your VPS, around the clock: you do not need it on this computer..." Choose "Move it to this computer" (trading from the VPS stops, and the VPS stays signed out until you move the app back from the Desk) or "Leave it there, open the Desk". Signing in through the website, the page offers the same choice: "Move the app to this computer" or "Leave it on the VPS and open the Desk".
If something goes wrong
- The app on my PC says it was signed out. The app was started somewhere else on your account. Sign in on the PC again to bring it back there, or leave it where it runs now.
- After moving, profiles show nothing connected. MetaTrader 5 and Telegram are signed in where the app runs. Open Connections in the Desk and sign in each profile's MetaTrader and Telegram in the new place.
- After moving, my settings and listeners are missing. "Sync settings & listeners" was off, so they stayed on the old computer. Sign the old computer back in, turn settings sync on there, then move again. If a profile is missing in the app's window, press the refresh arrow in its top bar ("Refresh your account").
- "The approval ran out before the app on that computer picked it up." The app is closed there or the computer is offline. Start it (on a Windows VPS, connect once with Remote Desktop), then "Sign it back in" again.
- "This code has run out of time: no app used it within ten minutes." Press "Make a new code" when you are at that computer.
- "A code is 12 letters and digits, like ABCD-1234-EFGH." The code was mistyped. Type it again, with or without the dashes.
- "This computer was not accepted". It was declined in the Desk, or nobody answered in time. Make a new code and try again.
- A computer I do not recognise asks to sign in. Press "Decline". A request only appears after someone typed a code made in your Desk: if you made none, change your password and sign out the other devices under Account → Security → "Active sessions".
- Two places seem to trade. Only one computer is signed in at a time. Check the list of computers: one is "running the app", the others are "signed out" or "app closed".
- A computer I no longer use is still listed. Sign it out if it is still signed in, then press "Remove".
